In an entirely unique way, Rein Dufait (Ostend, °1990) combines a variety of materials and techniques to create striking images. For his Eén enorme seconde exhibition in De Garage he created a series of new works in cardboard, which he combines with previously unseen sculptures. Aside from sculptural pieces, this exhibition shows two-dimensional work and several series of artists’ books.
When creating a new piece Rein Dufait always probes the boundaries. The artist finds nourishment in a never-ending curiosity for the subject matter. He defines and elaborates the details himself. His work is conceptual and visual, brutal and tactile. It appears delicate and light, although the materials are sometimes heavy and ponderous. The sculptures, paintings, drawings and artists’ books are never narrative, and rarely figurative, but often evocative of organic structures. He succeeds in allowing the natural, procedural, creative and sculptural processes to come together in his work.
The artist took the title for the exhibition in Mechelen from Samuel Beckett's Stories and Texts for Nothing. The Eén enorme seconde exhibition testifies to his love of poetic phrases and redolent neologisms. This exhibition runs alongside Doppelganger, an exhibition by Hans Demeulenaere. Tickets for De Garage give access to both exhibitions.
